Client Spotlight: Surf Expo at the Orange County Convention Center

At Dynamite Studio, we’re big fans of outdoor activities, so when we learned about the Surf Expo’s big event at the Orange County Convention Center, we knew we wanted to be involved. To our surprise, when we reached out, they hadn’t yet lined up anyone to document their show. That’s when Angie Marks, the marketing director of Surf Expo, filled us in on the scope of their event. It’s everything from surfboards to beach essentials, paddleboards to resort wear. It’s a B2B show designed to connect surf and beach brands with the retailers who sell their products, highlighting the latest and greatest the industry has to offer.

In September, we had the privilege of creating loads of dynamic video content for Surf Expo, and we’re thrilled to team up with them again for their January 2025 show. Here’s a glimpse at what we produced:

  • Event Sizzles: Two 1-2 minute videos featuring short testimonials from exhibitors (brands) and attendees (buyers), alongside vibrant footage from the show floor and on-site events.

  • Social Media Reels: 4 reels in total, including:

    • Day 1 & Day 2 daily recaps delivered by the end of each day

    • A show recap due one week later

    • A final recap reel delivered a week after that

  • Onsite Editing:

    • 12-hour days

    • One videographer with an assistant editor

    • Two days of coverage

  • Music Selection: Collaborating with Surf Expo to narrow down music choices that complemented the event’s energy.

Angie shared with us how these reels play a crucial role in Surf Expo’s strategy:

“These help with our registration reinforcement… people that registered but are still maybe on the fence about attending. Obviously, within driving distance but also for those who decided not to register and wish they had (FOMO is real, lol). The recap is for everyone who was there, and we like to share what the event was like and maybe see themselves in it… and again shows those who weren’t what they were missing. We use all 3 of these various times for show hype, promos, etc., on social too.”

When it came to gathering interviews and testimonials, Surf Expo’s flexible and intuitive approach made all the difference:

“We have found that trying to work off of a schedule or list (for interviews) never seems to work well as there is no way to know when they’ll be free or busy and/or who will have a booth busy at what time. It is easy to see the booths that are staying busy and have a good vibe with a camera-friendly face… so just catching those on the fly seems to work the best. Once onsite, I can steer them to certain booths based on what my sales team tips me off on. Retailers are a little trickier, but we can coordinate a couple quick meetups for those I needed. I’ll provide some prompt questions for both.”

Making a video is more than just throwing a couple of clips together. It takes a lot of planning and organizing to get everything you need, especially when you’re at a busy event with a lot going on. Luckily, we love busy and can turn on a dime with what’s needed and when. We’re used to running from one spot to another while keeping everyone completely on the same page and getting everything we need to make a killer video.

Client Feedback

The Surf Expo’s response after the event was, “Everything went well, and the onsite social edits were great! We look forward to seeing the rest as they come in. Thank you!” With their almost 30k followers on Instagram, the reels we created received fantastic comments, “Amazing real reel! Such a day!”, “Such a great show!!!”, and “Can’t wait for the next one!” Working with Surf Expo has been a fun experience, and we’re excited to collaborate with them again in January. Capturing the vibrant energy and connections made at events like these is what we do best, and seeing our work make an impact on their marketing strategy is always pretty cool.

Event videos are more than just documentation; they’re powerful tools that bring your event to life long after it’s over. They capture the energy, connections, and highlights in a way that gets people excited. From driving event attendance with FOMO-inducing previews to creating like-worthy recaps for attendees, videos ensure your event’s impact extends far beyond the show floor. They’re versatile assets for social media, marketing campaigns, and reinforcing your brand’s story—helping you engage, inspire, and grow your community.
